Things to do in Autumn and Winter…

12th October 2021 Things to do in Northumberland

If you’re planning an autumn or winter break in Northumberland then there are lots of things to do if the weather is, ahem, seasonal! Here we’re concentrating on activities you can enjoy if you’re staying in Wooler and don’t want to drive too far.

Sport

You can drive (or we can arrange a taxi to take you) to Alnmouth railway station and  jump on a train to the grand city of Newcastle where you have the choice of Premiership football at the iconic St. James Park or Premiership rugby at Kingston Park. There’s also a great day out to be had at Newcastle Races who have a busy calendar of race days all through the autumn. If horse racing appeals, then there’s also the lovely Kelso races which is an easy drive from the hotel.

Castle Tours

Castles tend to be quite spooky by their very nature so make excellent venues for Halloween. Try booking yourself on a ghost tour at Chillingham Castle or a Dracula evening at Bamburgh Castle if you dare! For something more mellow, then Alnwick Gardens at Alnwick Castle has a lovely light trail in the run up to Christmas.

Christmas Markets & Winter Wonderlands

You can get to Edinburgh really easily from Wooler – just drive over to Berwick and it’s less than an hour on the train. We can arrange a cab to the station and back if you want to treat yourself to some mulled wine while you’re there. For something a bit nearer, Ford has a lovely Christmas market too. If you are really in the Christmas mood, then why not take a trip over to Kielder for their Winter Wonderland, or down to Whitehouse Farm for their popular Santa’s Enchanted Elf Journey.

Shopping

We recommend shopping local, so do try the shops in Wooler if you’re looking for gifts. You’ll also find lovely small shops in Alnwick, Morpeth, Rothbury, Berwick and Amble too, but if you want to hit it big, then both Edinburgh and Newcastle will keep you happy!
