In a world where we are focusing more and more on local rather than global, it feels good to support small producers. And where better to start than with our micro-brewers and distillers.
Craft Beers
First and Last Brewery in Elsdon curate a lovely box containing the best of the region, a great way to try before buying. But they also make their own marvellous beers, so make sure to try them too!
Rigg & Furrow farmhouse brewery is just outside Acklington and open on some Saturday afternoons in 2021 (please check their website for dates) if you want to pop in for a chat and a swift one.
Brewis Beer Co is a family run firm based in Amble. They often have delicious street food vendors outside their HQ too.
Grounding Angels are based in the lovely market town of Hexham and are a passionate bunch of brewers. We particularly like their Snazberry Juice!
Cheviot Brewery are not far from us in Ford/Etal and not only do they own the pub, but they also have a tap, glamping and most importantly, alpacas!
Twice Brewed Brew House with their amazing beers and gin would have been very popular with the Roman soldiers sent to man Hadrian’s Wall.
Muckle Brewing in Haltwhistle is a tiny garden brewery producing marvellous bottled and casked beer.
Bear Claw Brewery is in Berwick upon Tweed and specialises in oak-fermented and aged beer so well worth a try.
Allendale Brewery is based in a former smelting mill in the rugged wilderness of the North Pennines and focuses on cask ales.
Rum
Not the first spirit that comes to mind when thinking about local producers, but Alnwick Rum is delicious!
Gin
Holy Island Gin is from the same group of distillers as Alnwick rum and makes a mean G&T.

Alnwick Gin from the Northumberland Spirit company is part of an excellent portfolio of local spirits.
Durham Gin (and Vodka) are included here because Durham is definitely North of the Humber, and their gins and vodkas are superb.
Sloe Crafts, Thropton use sloes in all sorts of delicious gins and liqueurs.
Whisky
Soon to be the pride of Wooler, Ad Gefrin has started the process of producing a brand-new malt whisky but we’ll have to be patient because it won’t be ready for a while…
Mead
Lindisfarne Mead is a honey-based drink made at St Aidan’s Winery on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and is beautifully described as “a Legend in a Glass”.
